Veteran's Day Large Scale American Flag Relief Sculpture

My school is hosting a Veteran's Day celebration to honor our military men and women. I wanted to do my part to thank those who serve our country especially since my dad and brothers have served in the Army, Navy and the Marines. All of my classes were introduced to the history of Veteran's Day by viewing a video on United Streaming. We also looked at Jasper Johns and other artists who used patriotic images in their work. My favorite project and the most visually striking is our eight foot long sculptural flag created by my fourth and fifth graders. Last year I found this great lesson on Artsonia which showed how to make " texture boxes. " I took this basic idea and created a large scale American Flag. Each student made a 4.5 x 9 inch texture themed paper sculpture which I later assembled into a large eight foot long flag. Our fantastic volunteer coordinator used the flag as a back drop for the photo of our veterans and their families. Check back

I finally saw the light, DIY Solar Chandelier

I finally put my solar chandelier together after storing everything in my shed since last summer. I got the idea from my good friend, Windy. I took all the electric wires out and unscrewed the bulbs, than glued on solar lights. See my post on a diy solar wall sconce for more details... Its hanging on my back patio, love the twinkling lights...

DIY solar wall sconce and garden chandelier

I have a group of old friends, former co-workers, who meet regularly to share bits and pieces of our busy lives. At our last big pow-wow, my creative friend Windy, shared one of her new projects. She has been making unique solar chandeliers for friends, family, and even has sold several to co-workers. She collects old brass chandeliers, takes out the electric innards,adds garden solar lights, and spray paints them black. I had a working led solar light but no base courtesy of my son's mowing mishap which worked perfectly for my wall sconce idea. I spray painted the solar light black, taking care to mask off the solar panel. I glued on a quarter before gluing
